This is why dogs need clothes - protect your dog from the cold - POODLE PREFERRED 7

What was it like before? The dog slept outside the house, kept watch, and was fed leftovers and scraps. Today, everything is different, and many dogs have a better life than some people. Dogs have changed over time; overbreeding and inbreeding have made them more sensitive to disease. They have allergies and intolerances and freeze in the cold and wet, so dogs need clothes. Where did we end up here? What kind of world is this?

New world, new dogs

You can complain and complain a lot now, because everything used to be different, everything used to be better. This is certainly true of many things, but many things are better now than they used to be. When it comes to dog breeding, opinions differ here! I am of the opinion that dog breeds should be preserved as long as they are healthy and not life-limiting for the dog. Shortness of breath and health problems that are known before birth, such as hereditary diseases, limit life.

But if a dog doesn’t have an undercoat and therefore needs clothing – that’s definitely not life-limiting. Many dog breeds from warm areas have shed their undercoat or so-called fur over the centuries. Completely natural! We are talking about dog breeds similar to the Italian Greyhound, Viszla or the Dalmatian. But the poodle also has no undercoat. If you take such a dog to cooler areas, they will freeze. If we go out in the fall without a jacket, we will freeze and most likely get sick. That’s exactly how our dogs feel too!

Some dogs need clothes – a fact!

Let me introduce you to my poodle Burberry Balenciaga. She is a normal miniature poodle, but also a dog model and a true fashion icon. Maybe you already know her from Instagram, TikTok or our YouTube channel, where we share photos and videos every day and give insights into our modern dog life.

Burberry has no undercoat and Burberry freezes easily. But Burberry likes to go out even when it’s cold, when it rains or snows. Burberry loves to play and run around – preferably outside! So what should I do? I don’t want her to get cold and sick. Because, what many people don’t even think about, dogs can also get sick. Can catch a cold, catch a cold, get pneumonia or a bladder infection. And that happens faster than you think! Of course we want to avoid that. If you don’t know whether your dog has an undercoat and whether he freezes outside when it gets cold, talk to your vet about the topic. With pedigree dogs you can of course google whether your dog has an undercoat, but not with mixed breeds. The vet can best assess this and will be able to tell you whether your dog brings clothes.

It is also important to remember that some dogs are simply sensitive to cold and wet conditions, with or without an undercoat. The important thing is that it’s about your loved one. Only you can judge whether your dog likes wearing a sweater or not. Whether he’s cold outside or doesn’t like going out when it’s wet. Burberry, for example, doesn’t go out without a rain jacket when it rains, but jumps into every puddle with a running start. We’ve had both a cold and a bladder infection. Neither is so nice!

Shop for dog clothes

So, dogs need clothes and I dress Burberry. It is important to me that the clothes for dogs fit well, i.e. have the right size and fit. Size S is not the same as size S everywhere. You also have to differentiate between shops according to body shape. The Italian Greyhound has a very different body type than a Dachshund or French Bulldog and yet the clothing for these dog breeds is divided into the same size categories. However, my miniature poodle will not fit a size S harness made for French bulldogs. So you have to be a little careful and try out which brands fit best and are pleasant.

In addition to size and fit, comfort also plays a major role. We don’t want to wear a sweater that constantly pokes, and neither do our dogs. Freedom of movement should not be restricted and clothing should be appropriate for the occasion. In the forest, for example, I don’t wear anything that could get Burberry caught on branches or bushes. Everything can get dirty or get dirty and I’m never angry because you can wash everything! Dogs need clothes – but can they also be fashionable and trendy items of clothing or not?
